چکیده

We investigated how sperm morphology varies across 16 species of shorebirds in the Scolopacidae, Charadriidae, and Jacanidae. Sperm were significantly longer in nonmonogamous than in socially monogamous species. Nonmonogamous species also I Received 27 January 1999. As the midpiece houses the mitochondria for powering the tail, this suggests that sperm competition may select for greater investment inmobilitv. After controlling for phvlogenv and male bodv mass, sperm tail lengih was co&elated positively tb relative testis size. There was no evidence that variation in sperm morphology was related to either male body mass (through allometry) or egg size (via linkage disequilibrium). Instead, our results suggest that sperm size in shorebirds increases with the intensity of sperm competition. SHORT COMMUNICATIONS 849

Long sperm fertilize more eggs in a bird

Sperm competition, in which the ejaculates of multiple males compete to fertilize a female's ova, results in strong selection on sperm traits. Although sperm size and swimming velocity are known to independently affect fertilization success in certain species, exploring the relationship between sperm length, swimming velocity and fertilization success still remains a challenge. Here, we use the...

Sperm competition and sperm midpiece size: no consistent pattern in passerine birds.

Sperm competition is thought to be a major force driving the evolution of sperm shape and function. However, previous studies investigating the relationship between the risk of sperm competition and sperm morphometry revealed inconclusive results and marked differences between taxonomic groups. In a comparative study of two families of passerines (Fringillidae and Sylviidae) and also across spe...

Postcopulatory Sexual Selection Results in Spermatozoa with More Uniform Head and Flagellum Sizes in Rodents

Interspecific comparative studies have shown that, in most taxa, postcopulatory sexual selection (PCSS) in the form of sperm competition drives the evolution of longer and faster swimming sperm. Work on passserine birds has revealed that PCSS also reduces variation in sperm size between males at the intraspecific level. However, the influence of PCSS upon intra-male sperm size diversity is poor...

Variation in Apical Hook Length Reflects the Intensity of Sperm Competition in Murine Rodents

BACKGROUND Post-copulatory sexual selection has been shown to shape morphology of male gametes. Both directional and stabilizing selection on sperm phenotype have been documented in vertebrates in response to sexual promiscuity. METHODOLOGY Here we investigated the degree of variance in apical hook length and tail length in six taxa of murine rodents. CONCLUSIONS Tail sperm length and apica...

Sperm competition leads to functional adaptations in avian testes to maximize sperm quantity and quality.

The outcome of sperm competition (i.e. competition for fertilization between ejaculates from different males) is primarily determined by the relative number and quality of rival sperm. Therefore, the testes are under strong selection to maximize both sperm number and quality, which are likely to result in trade-offs in the process of spermatogenesis (e.g. between the rate of spermatogenesis and...
